About the Division

The Civic Development Division focuses on strengthening communities, promoting responsible citizenship, encouraging social participation, and contributing to inclusive, informed, and resilient societies. It examines the relationship between citizens, communities, institutions, and society while creating opportunities for meaningful participation in public life and community development. The Division understands civic development as a process through which individuals and communities become informed, capable, participatory, and socially responsible. It provides a platform for students, researchers, academics, community leaders, civil society organisations, public institutions, practitioners, and citizens to engage with issues related to governance, citizenship, social development, and community participation. Key areas include Citizen Participation, Civic Engagement, Local Governance, Community Development, Public Policy, Constitutional and Civic Awareness, Public Service Delivery, Social Inclusion, Youth Leadership, Digital Citizenship, Environmental Citizenship, and Community Resilience. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding local challenges and encouraging participatory approaches that involve communities in identifying problems, developing solutions, and evaluating outcomes. Through research, awareness programmes, workshops, field studies, community initiatives, and collaborative projects, the Division seeks to connect academic knowledge with community realities. It also promotes awareness of democratic institutions, constitutional values, civic responsibilities, public services, and mechanisms of citizen participation. Ultimately, the Division aims to contribute to informed citizens, inclusive communities, responsive institutions, and socially responsible societies by transforming knowledge and civic awareness into meaningful participation and community-level impact.
